Hello alphaomega, I´m sorry but I´m not aware of any program that enables you to test your graphic card in windows like in linux, maybe you could try some benchmarks like this real time HDR for DX
Code:
http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/
or Furmark to test OpenGL
Code:
http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/

I have a suggestion, download the latest driver from nvidia, then completely uninstall your display driver clean the pc with driver sweeper
Code:
http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
and then install the latest driver you downloaded.

no go with rthdribl.  it reports:
Warning: nothing will be rendered.
The reference rendering device was selected, but your
computer only has reduced-functionality reference device
installed.  Install the DirextX SDK to get the full
reference device. [OK]

no go with Furmark.  it reports:
That I do not have an opengl 2.0 compatible card.

As to the drivers, as far as I know...I am using the
latest drivers available for my card (71.89) from nvidia.

And they were installed on this fresh xp sp3 install
right after the updates were installed.

Either way, I still think it should work
(considering how close I've gotten).

Oh yeah now I see, you said your graphic card is nvidia vanta, I thought you have the nv 8800, but i misread the post. Vanta is a really old card and I´m sure it cannot do OpenGL2 needed for furmark as well as DX9 support for rthdribl. I´m kind of lost now, it can be either a driver issue or problem of the card but if it cannot work properly even on 8800 then I really don´t know. I can only suggest upgrading your graphic card to a more recent model.

RivaTuner allows fine tuning of large variety of video cards, including the TNT architecture, please do your research on how to use it ( Edit: RivaTuner's guide ), do not abuse overclocking (10-15 %). Quite likely it's gonna be useless in alphaomega's case, but ...

Maybe you, alphaomega, should stay with ShockAero3D, or apply WinFlip to maximized windows only. You may want to check out TaskSwitchXP.

Happy New Year everybody !
